About SugarCity

Cobraspen Vastgoedontwikkeling B.V. has been re-developing SugarCity since 2000.
The whole area will be updated: the Silos where the sugar used to be stored has been converted into hyper modern offices and showrooms; the 21.000 m² Factory Hall which is now being used for events and a Factory Outlet is under development.

Approximately 108.000 m² of new developments will be built on the old area known locally as the “CSM Suikerfabriek” in Halfweg. A large part of these developments are within the old factory buildings which are being converted, however there is also ample space for new projects like the 25.000 m² Factory Outlet. Sometimes one gets caught up by time though: as soon as the zoning plan was irrevocable, the market changes and there was no longer as much demand for the proposed cinema and offices. Due to the flexibility of the zoning plan, space was made for the Factory Outlet.

According to the original plans for SugarCity, a surface area of 108.000 square meters has been allocated for new developments. These new project will be partly realised in the existing buildings with their unique industrial look, and partly in completely new projects. Updated plans have been introduced though –not in the least because of the continuing pressure of the current economic climate. Most of the offices and the cinema have disappeared, and the slogan “Active Leisure” has taken their place.

Retaining and restoring these valuable existing industrial buildings are crucial to the success of this project, the current development plans propose a rich mix of appointments to ensure a lively and accessible environment.

International FIABCI Prix d'Excellence

In 2011 SugarCity received the Prix dÉxcellence of FIABCI International, category ‘Environmental Conservation’. SugarCity is one of the most controversial re-developments of industrial heritage in Europe, and the SugarCity project, with its landmark silos, designed by architects Soeters Van Eldonk, was selected by the ‘oversight panel’ for its high quality development of both the area and the former sugar factory buildings.

Travelling to SugarCity: NS Station Halfweg-Zwanenburg

In 2012 the NS opened a train station directly next to SugarCity: Halfweg-Zwanenburg. There are four trains an hour between Amsterdam Centraal and Zandvoort aan Zee, stopping on the way in Haarlem as well.

History

Over time the production of sugar became less and less important for the CSM company, which led to its closure in 1992. This left approximately 110.000 m2 available for re-development, which Cobraspen acquired by public tender in 2000.
