Sugar silos
The two fifty meter high sugar silos are the beacons for SugarCity, forming an enormous contrast in scale with the other buildings in the area. These former storage tanks each comprise two concentric concrete cylinders, providing a perfect opportunity for their new use as office space.
Abstract facade
Before fitting the windows and doors, the brickwork exterior walls on the ground floor were removed in order to reveal the supporting structure and show how beautifully these giants stand on their slender legs. The abstract nature and scale of the building has been preserved through the absence of horizontal lines and the arrangement of a diagonal pattern of diamond-shaped windows across the entire facade.
Exciting
Half of the windows are real, the other half are actually plate glass panels. It is therefore impossible to see the configuration of the floors from the outside, perpetuating the excitement of the whole building. Many colors were considered for the facades with the final decision being for a one-color cladding using silver-gray aluminum. The effect of the contours and shadows of the flat diamond-shaped windows against the round walls was so exciting that no color was necessary. This effect disappears once darkness falls, however at night the building attracts attention again through the sparkling play of the colored lights in the window frames.
